Water Deregulation in England

2023-03-21T13:33:57+01:00

For England, April 2017 is the date scheduled for non-domestic users to be able to choose their own supplier, giving businesses the opportunity to save money in much the same way as they can with gas and electricity. The whole market will be opened up, increasing competition amongst suppliers that in turn will hopefully [...]

The History of ‘The Big Six’

2023-03-21T13:34:00+01:00

What is the Big Six? We have reached the end of our Energy Series. We have already looked at How Energy is Generated in our first post, with a brief history on each of the energy sources we use in the UK, moved onto Understanding Energy Supply in the next, and the difference between domestic and commercial energy, and will be ending the series with a more detailed look at ‘The Big Six’. These suppliers are considered the heavyweights of the energy industry, and supply their energy to 99% of the country’s domestic properties. This is a massive proportion of British homes being [...]

Understanding Energy Supply

2023-03-21T13:34:00+01:00

How Does Energy Supply Work? Having looked at where our energy comes from in our first post, ‘Understanding Energy Generation' with an overview of the four main sources, Fossil Fuels, Nuclear Power, Gas and Renewables, the next logical step is to look at how it is supplied, from where it starts to where it ends. Energy begins life with the generator, who sells it on what is known as the Wholesale Market. Once it hits this market it is then up to individual suppliers to trade with one another and look to accumulate the energy to sell on to you. Domestic In the Domestic [...]

Understanding Energy Generation

2023-03-21T13:34:01+01:00

Understanding the basics of energy generation, how it makes its way to us and who exactly is supplying it, is crucial understanding how and why it is so important. Over the next few months we will be compiling a simple series of blog posts that will look to answer these questions in a straightforward and hopefully informative way. In this, our first in the series, we will be looking at How Energy is Generated. In the UK we generate our energy from four main sources; Fossil Fuels, Nuclear Power, Gas and Renewables: Fossil Fuels As a species we have been using fossil fuels [...]

The Pros and Cons of Low Oil Prices

2023-03-21T13:34:02+01:00

Low Oil Prices The global oil prices have dropped dramatically over the past year, causing exporting nations to suffer financially and importing nations to benefit from cheap fuel and heating. From a somewhat stable $110 per barrel between 2010 and 2014, the price for crude oil currently stands at $48 per barrel, more than a 50% decrease in just 12 months. This significant drop means different things to different nations, with weak economies in some countries and increased production in others the cause for such substantial change. But what are the positives and negatives of low oil prices and what does [...]
